SEIU Healthcare Florida Members Win Big for Quality Care

Do you have a victory from your work place to share? Tell how your co-workers stood up for quality care!
2009
WEST BROWARD NURSING HOME
Recently, one union member returned to work at West Broward after being fired unjustly for an allegation of abuse and neglect. Our union filed a grievance, conducted an investigation and found that no abuse had occurred. The company agreed with our findings and she went back to work with sixteen months of back pay and seniority.

WILTON MANOR HEALTH AND REHAB
One of our members at Wilton Manor was unjustly fired for insubordination. Again, our union investigated and the issue was resolved through a grievance. She returned to work, the disciplinary action was removed from her file and she received back pay.

HILLCREST NURSING HOME
Housekeepers at Hillcrest fought for fairness and dignity and won a starting wage increase from $6.79 to $8.50 per hour.

2008

  • We won 31 contracts which increased our wages and voices for quality care.St. Pete Gen at Picnic

  • We fought hard and won a contract with SeaCrest, the state’s largest nursing home chain.

  • Members at St. Pete  General Hospital showed their unity and strength in a hard-fought staffing campaign.

  • At Coral Gables Hospital, the minimum wage was increased. Also, after filing a grievance workers in Radiology who were being sent home 30 minutes early everyday were given back their normal schedules.

  • Because of their hard-fought union contract at the University of Miami Hospital, employees gained across the board wage increases and significant raises for the lowest paid workers at the hospital.  These increases helped management recruit more workers and improve staffing.  Workers are now back at the table to renew the contract and press for more changes to improve wages, benefits, staffing and care.

  • Housekeepers at St. Mary’s Medical Center and their families stood on picket lines and fought hard to win a contract with their employer, MediDyn, . Tenet workers at St. Mary’s, Northshore and Coral Gables hospitals are now campaigning to stop Tenet  cutbacks.

  • Members at Northshore Medical Center turned their hospital around by showing the power of their union.
