Honoring Claudette Fay Barrett 1948-2010

Dear SEIU Healthcare Florida members,

One of the founders of our union passed away before she could actually become a dues paying member.  Claudette Barrett was a leader during the organizing campaign at Sunrise Nursing home in Broward where they voted for the union in 1997.  It took 13 years to get to the bargaining table because the employer filed objections and appeals all the way to the Circuit Court, designed to delay & deny justice.  Click here to read a report by American Rights at Work entitled Some of Them are Brave, that profiles the Sunrise workers’ organizing challenges. 

The workers’ victory was finally upheld and they are presently in the process of bargaining their first contract.

We honor Claudette’s sacrifice. Her determination to transform lives will live on.
